As fun as fantasy basketball can be there will always be people who cause a divide in the league, almost to the point where they ruin our good time. Unbeknown to them, every fantasy league has them; these are 10 fantasy basketball guys you don’t want to be.

The take your time to draft guy – Draft picks are rarely sprung upon people. The draft orders are set before the draft starts. Heck, most sites even send a friendly email reminder when it is your turn to pick. You know the draft has started so there is no reason not to make your pick in a timely manner instead of using 23 and a half hours of the allotted 24 hours for each pick; especially when you are in round 3 and the season is only a week away. It’s a sure fire way to piss off the rest of the league.

Pick up and drop everyone guy – Wow, congrats, you kept Gallinari on your squad for 17 minutes. I hope you are proud of yourself. Just wait the day or so for him to clear waivers with the 30 other players you added and dropped so you can do it again tomorrow.

Lame trash talk guy – You know the guy. “Hey u. ur team is nuthin! I’m gonna beat ya so bad cuz u know nothin about ball. I got Bron I got skillz. U hater. U cant do anything to stop me!!!!!11!”. Yeah. This guy. May he get crotch rot before one million flesh eating insects feast upon his crotch.

The guy who only drafts ‘has beens’ – This guy usually heads straight to the league’s trash talk area to tell you how he will annihilate you with Vince Carter, Shawn Marion, Ben Gordon , Jason Richardson and Amar’e Stoudemire before adding that ‘snagging’ Leandro Barbosa late in the draft was the icing on the cake. Yeah, good team, dude. If it were 2008.

Make stupid and insulting trades guy – Yeah, dude. Offering me Terrence Ross and Ricky Rubio for LeBron James is clearly a fair trade for both of us. No matter how hard you try to sell it, it’s not going to happen; and you know what? Don’t act all pissed off and offended when the trade is declined. Don’t be this guy. Repeat: Don’t be this guy.

The guy who makes outlandish position votes – This guy needs a forward but can’t bear to lose any of his guards. The solution is put forward a position vote proposal that a guard like Jamaal Crawford becomes Guard/Forward citing the he believes he saw the Clippers play Paul, Reddick & Crawford at the same time. So what, dude? I might use a screwdriver to start a car, but that doesn’t make it a key.

Guy who thinks he has the next Linsanity – You’ve seen him. He is related to the Pick up and drop everyone guy. He’s see’s someone like Anthony Morrow get a bit of court time and make a few baskets due to injury or foul trouble and wastes no time snatching him from the Free Agents list. Rest assured; the next time you will see Morrow is a week or 2 later waiting to clear waivers.

The MIA guy – This is the guy who signs up early, changes his team name 3 or 4 times in the first week or 2, gloats about the awesomeness of his picks and disappears 2 weeks into the season. Was he a figment of your imagine? Nah.. May he rest in pieces…. Many pieces.

The excuses guy – How ever confident they may be, they lose more than they win; but they will not rest on why they lost the games. Apparently they are only manager to experience injuries, their internet was down, the alignment of the moon wasn’t right, the room they set their roster had bad feng shui; they won’t stop at anything to tell you why didn’t win.

This guy – The guy who takes the time to sit down at a computer to list the guys you don’t want to be when it comes to fantasy sports.

Agree with this list, or not? Tell us in the comments section below. What other ‘guys’ have you come across in fantasy sports that we shouldn’t aspire to be?

Who did the 36ers add this season?

Peter Crawford: coming off an injury riddled season the NBL veteran is hoping he still has legs

Daequon Montreal: SEABL star made famous by a huge 46 point effort in the SEABL Grand Final

Jamar Wilson: Underutilised at Cairns and looking to prove he still has game

Tom Daly: Fat Golfer who lost weight.. Oh.. Tom.. Fringe NBL local product

Sam Johns: exciting young prospect suits up in the NBL for the first time

Who did the 36ers lose this season?

Gary Ervin: Mighty Mouse returned ‘home’ to the Wollongong Hawks

Jason Cadee: Ran to the Kings as quick as he runs the floor

Daniel Johnson: Seeking a huge pay day in Europe

Jarrid Frye: One would question if the 36ers actually ‘lost’ him though. More like abandoned cargo at the airport.

Who will be the keys to success?

Whilst a defensive liability at times the main key for the 36ers success is filling the 16 points per game hole that Daniel Johnson leaves. Assuming Montreal is an effective player at the next level and Anthony Petrie taking on a slightly bigger load this may be a relatively easy feat to achieve.

Though the 36ers don’t look like the best team on paper they will need to learn quickly to share the load and use a bit of everything that everyone brings to the table. By playing as a team and everyone chipping in the 36ers could put up a bit of a fight. If that doesn’t work they will be relying on the three ball all season long.

Who will be the X-Factor that could elevate the 36ers if they step up?

Each year Joey Wright gets talked about by fans as a potential coach of the year and personally I have never seen it. He won a title with maybe the most stacked team in NBL history and underachieved with the Gold Coast Blaze. It is time for Joey to put his money where his mouth is and show that he can do more than argue with refs from the side line, continually looking disappointed, and blaming Adam Tatalovich for everything; and actually coach.

Another factor lies on their wings. Is Peter Crawford capable of playing at the level consistent with his history and will Mitch Creek show finally show the potential that is often talked about? If the answer is no to both these then the 36ers, with their weak bench will bust very early in the season.

Where will the 36ers finish on the ladder?

Last year’s grand finalists won’t see a repeat of last season. I can see the 36ers finishing outside the top 4 ending the season in 5th or 6th place on the ladder.

What reason does an average fan have to watch the 36ers this season?

1. The open break: With Jamal Wilson looking to run the floor with the option to kick it off to Creek, Crawford, Montreal, Johns, Gibson, or even Petrie will be enough to keep fans on the edge of their seats

2. Mitch Creek: We all know that Mitch Creek is capable of soaring above the ring and it is time for the dude to make it happen out there on the court. His high flying acrobatics could help put the 36ers back on the map

3. Adam Gibson: When Gibbo’s hand gets hot it is on fire. Watching an ‘en fuego’ Gibbo hit shot after shot to keep his team in the game is one thing that makes basketball great

Who did the Perth Wildcats add this season?

DeAndre Daniels: The second round NBA Draft Pick has been stashed in Australia by the Toronto Raptors

Earnest Ross: Guamanian fresh out of college and built like a linebacker

Asst Coach Jamie O’Loughlin: joins the team with recent SEABL head coaching and national youth coaching experience

Who did the Wildcats lose this season?

James Ennis: The super-skinny dunker signed with the Miami Heat.

Erik Burdon: Singing for the Animals, or playing in the SEABL. Not too sure

Mathiang Muo: Dude was in the team, then he wasn’t. Thanks, Earnest Ross

Asst Coach Andy Stewart: Highly liked Assistant Coach has moved on

Who will be the keys to success?

Whilst DeAndre Daniels’ addition to the roster adds scoring punch the key to the Wildcats is the depth and experience of this roster playing together. When you consider that there are only two player changes to the roster that annihilated the 36ers in last season’s grand final; the idea is scary. Their commitment to the team and each other is admirable. Oh, and it is quite a luxury to sub Shawn Redhage out for Jesse Wagstaff, or Matty Knight for NBL Rookie of the Year, Tom Jervis.

Daniels is a player that has little problem with making his shots but is known to have trouble dealing with contact and passing out of double team pressure. A lot rides on how well the Wildcats can keep this guy open. A Matty Knight screen or two will do that.

Who will be the X-Factor that could elevate the Wildcats to absurdly good?

To have a reliable scorer off the bench is a highly sought after commodity in the world of hoops. If Earnest Ross can come off the bench and add the scoring punch that he seems capable of then the season could be a long one for all teams not based in Perth. Same if Tom Jervis continues to impact the game like he did last season. Jesse Wagstaff is another one that has been sitting between the cusp on solid NBL player and NBL Superstar. If the dude can make the jump to the next level then the Wildcats could be scary good.

NCAA Final Four standout, DeAndre Daniels also plays a pivotal role in the team’s success. It is evident that the guy doesn’t like passing the ball, much preferring to shoot it. A quick look at his stats tells you that the dude average 0.6 assists per forty minutes on the court. That was the worst of any of the top 100 NBA draft hopefuls. Should Daniels go into ‘star mode’ and not involve his team in a team heavy system, watch the offence dry up.

Where will the Wildcats finish on the ladder?

Though this season the NBL seems to have made huge strides in obtaining a large amount of talent, with most teams looking a lot stronger on paper, anything less than 1st place on the ladder and another NBL Championship would be considered a disappointment.

What reason does an average fan have to watch the Wildcats this season?

1. Damian Martin: Has there ever been another point guard that is capable of leading their team in steals, blocks and boards? Getting goose bumps from hearing 11,000 fans roar with excitement after a Damian Martin chase down block is an amazing feeling. He is the sort of guy you just point at and say “That is how you play defence”

2. Jermaine ‘Dolla’ Beal: In my opinion Beal was the Wildcats best player last season, at his best in the clutch. Often in the latter stages of a game Beal took over, nailing a late shot to remove the hope from the other team or making a late play to seal the game. It is moments like these that make watching basketball one of the greatest things

3. Transition Offence: When a team executes their defence as well as the Wildcats do, you can expect quick transition baskets. We saw James Ennis last season anticipating the steal and the fast break dunk, but this season expect to see similar from Daniels, Ross and even Jesse Wagstaff who has been throwing them down in the pre-season with gusto

How is this for a nice gesture? The Utah Jazz signed 5yo JP Gibson to a one day contract.

Diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukemia in 2012, Gibson checked in to the game with 29 seconds to go in the third period of an intra-club scrimmage. To the roar of the crowd, Gibson gets the inbound pass and burns past first round darft pick, Dante Exum for a dunk in traffic.

I have never been a huge fan of the Utah Jazz but you simply have to respect the gesture. Treating the little dude and his family to a day they will remember.

It is moments like this that make you realise that in this day and age of self-centredness that there chivalry still exists; and those knights wear Jazz jerseys.

Not so long ago TMZ reported that former Stone Temple Pilots front man, Scott Weiland had been arrested for shoplifting razors from a store in Beverley Hills. When searched, the Five-O found some meth on the on the alleged offender and has been cooling off behind bars since July 26, unable to come up with the $95,000 bail.

The man identified himself as Scott Weiland which was enough to fool the police and the jailers. The Beverley Hills Police Department even provided TMZ with a written statement stating that Weiland had been taken in to custody.

It wasn’t until Weiland, who is no stranger to crime and punishment, posted a video of himself in a recording studio on Facebook assuring TMZ that he wasn’t behind bars and had in fact been recording material and touring and that TMZ should expect a call from his lawyers.

This wasn’t enough for the Sheriff’s office who were still adamant that they wad the 46 year old Weiland and had done a physical check to verify his identity.

It wasn’t until later the BHPD put their tail between their legs, stuck one hand up in the air and said ‘My bad’. Now convinced they did not have Weiland in custody but identified via a FBI fingerprint return that the inmate was 44 year old Jason Michael Hurley. Hurley can now expect a further charge of providing false information added to the burglary and drug charges.

The LA county sheriff tried to justify the mix up by saying that the offender has red hair like Weiland…. Well, like he had in the music video for their 1993 hit, Plush.

Other than a similar hair cut the guy doesn’t really look like Weiland.

Having a second rate alleged criminal imposter may be Stone Temple Pilots biggest atrocity since Chester Bennington became their front man.

NBA Free Agency is in full swing with rumours flying around here and there about where many of the league’s stars are going to end up. One of the main rumours in the air is a trade scenario that involves sending Minnesota big man, Kevin Love to join LeBron James in Cleveland in a trade package that involves NBA #1 pick, Andrew Wiggins. This is why the Cavs should not trade Wiggins for Love.

There is no doubt that the trio of James, Love and Irving would a force to be reckoned with and would be arguably one of the best trios in the game. Having a big guy that can stretch defences creating a huge hole inside for penetrators such as James and Irving to weave magic on the inside is a huge commodity. The concern would be how the Cavs work to cover the huge hole in defence with Irving and Love both on the court. But the 2014 NBA finals showed us that there is more to basketball than having a good trio.

With LeBron heading back home the Cavs have the ideal opportunity to build a team, and a team to win titles. My esteemed colleague, Mookie, will tell you that the Cavs have the perfect opportunity to go into ‘win now’ mode though deep down I’m certain he knows that isn’t what is best for Cleveland right now. James himself has stated that his return to Cleveland is a work in progress.

Wiggins is tipped to be a future star of the league. Let him learn from one of the best players of the modern era. What is the point in shipping him before you have seen the impact he can make in the league? If the Cavs wanted to be in ‘win now’ mode then the more NBA ready Jabari Parker would have been a better option.

A trade for Love is set to cost the Cavs the last two number one draft picks in Wiggins and Anthony Bennett as well as a future draft pick(s). Love would also eat up a lot of cap leading to the Cavs losing flexibility in Free Agencyageddon in 2015.

It makes little sense to trade away Wiggins and Bennett now for a core of James, Irving, Love, Anderson Varejao and Tristan Thompson when in a year’s time you can have a core of James, Irving, Wiggins, Bennett, Varejao, Thompson, and someone like Lamarcus Aldridge or Marc Gasol with the mountain of salary cap room they are capable of having. Sure, it will be tricky and will need to use a lot of creativity, but it could work. Get your weirdo with the beardo then.

So, Dan Gilbert, take out your Comic Sans font and send an open letter to the Wolves telling them “No Deal”.

The NBL Free agency period has begun and teams are looking to fill their ten roster spots with contracted players. As teams are announcing their latest signings, Mookie and I began to think; how would we build our team if it were up to us? The NBL is expecting new teams to begin arriving the season after next. If that time was now, who would we sign?

So with the points cap in mind and our ficitious cheque books open. These are the teams that we would build.

Team Haggard

PG Seth Curry (10) Iliadis, Trian (3)

SG Daniel Dillon (6) Drake U’u (4)

SF Peter Crawford (6) Bennie Lewis (4)

PF Ike Diogu (10) Majok Majok (3)

C Larry Davidson (7) Adam Ballinger (7)

Obviously this line-up sweats on being able to sign an Aussie centre in Davidson, Diogu capable to play centre in the NBL signed as an import as collateral rather than sign a more athletic import such as Devin Ebanks to cover the middle should Davidson immediately sign with the Hawks. Whether Luke Nevill wants to play in Oz might mean he could be another option. Adam Ballinger filling in inside minutes from off the bench. Diogu adds explosiveness and strength inside with long arms and a bit of shooting from out of the key.

Ater Majok’s cousin an interesting addition coming off the bench.

Peter Crawford competently covers the wing with a succession plan of nabbing someone like Igor Hadziomerovic the season after next. With a bit of luck, Bennie Lewis has learnt a little more about basketball in his time abroad and can be a productive role player from off the bench.

Daniel Dillon brings some energy to the floor. Dillon was the ability to change the context of the game in a few short minutes and Drake U’u coming off the bench proficient of playing either guard position and Trian Iliadis, a talented and quick guard making his NBL debut after tearing up WA’s SBL

Team Haggard is looking to fill the starting point guard slot and finish the team off with an exciting point guard. In this case enticing a fringe NBA player or dominant NBA-D leaguer with a few extra dollars in Seth Curry. Curry is a savy prospect that can excite and shoot the lights out.

Team Mookie

PG Rhys Martin (8) Everard Bartlett (3)

SG Leandro Barbosa (10) Peter Crawford (6)

SF Bennie Lewis (4) Brad Hill (5)

PF Gary Wilkinson (10) Adam Ballinger (7)

C Auryn MacMillan (4) Greg Vanderjagt (5)

Whilst putting together a team from scratch to enter the NBL right now is certainly a challenge, this squad could certainly be a winner if marketed as the team of Sydney’s Northern Beaches. With the central promise of excitement and passionate play, the Northern Beaches Blur will market themselves to both the long-term Northern Beaches locals, as well as the transplanted Brazilian community which has made the area their home.

The first key marquee signing would be that of NBA veteran Leandro Barbosa. The “Brazilian Blur” would embody the spirit of this new team and provide the razzle dazzle that the fans expect. Despite a lengthy NBA career, the speedy guard proved during this past NBA season that he still has it, scoring in double figures on five occasions, with a high of 21 points in a support role for the Phoenix Suns. As a free agent, a move downunder to an adoring Brazilian and Aussie fanbase would make for a nice final few years of Leandrinho’s career.

Partnering with Barbosa in the starting lineup in the excitement stakes will be both Gary Wilkinson and Bennie Lewis. The duo, who both show dynamic offensive play, could be lured back to Australia with the salary cap room, and relaxed beach lifestyle that the new club could offer. Rhys Martin is the perfect set-the-table point guard to get these offensive players the ball.

The centre position will be manned by two of the most potential-filled Aussie free agent big men on the market, in Auryn MacMillan and Greg Vanderjagt. Both have shown their glimpses of promise, and as a duo, they’d find a good game between them on a weekly basis. Backing up both frontcourt positions is Adam Ballinger. “Balls” has the experience to provide offence off the bench and to also teach the younger bigs some new tricks. He is the perfect player to spell Wilkinson.

Peter Crawford still has plenty in the tank, and a dynamic bench role as the scoring punch injection could prolong his career. Brad Hill and Everard Bartlett — both underused by their previous teams — have proven in recent years that if given decent minutes, they can be impactful contributors in this league. They are both the type of players that add to the fast-paced razzamatazz that is the Northern Beaches Blur

This task wasn’t as easy as we first thought. There isn’t a lot of talent with proven NBL experience available. We are taking our chances on players who are yet to cut their teeth in the league

So, this is how we would sign our own NBL teams. What spots did we get right? What did we get wrong? How and who would you sign your team? Who isn’t looking forward to the NBL season?

With the NBA season done and dusted a huge void fills the lives of hoops fans. That is until 2kSports drops its latest iteration of its virtual NBA biosphere and fans can finally get their hoops fix. NBA 2k has been the main stay, with EA Sports struggling to piece together a solid hoops game for many years now. NBA 2k has jumped in leaps and bounds, particularly with the step into next gen which saw a fantastic looking product mesmerize us on our big screens. With NBA 2k15 due to drop in early October let’s have a look at 10 changes we would like to see in NBA 2k15.

1. Get rid of VC (virtual currency) from the MyGM mode. It is absurd that the player needs to spend VC on setting the line-up and almost everything else. Players just want to sit back and manage their team. So let them. Why let the barrier of VC get in the way of a player enjoying the mode. Save the VC for MyTeam and MyCareer. It makes a bit more sense there.

2. Allow the user to set the amount of games in MyGM mode. As it stands, you are forced to play an 82 game season. Part of the enjoyment of the mode is to build a dynasty and conquer the league which is real hard to do when you are forced to play (or sim) 82 games. Let the player choose a shorter season which allows them to get through seasons quicker.

3. Whilst we are still on the topic of MyGM mode. Why not let the player create an expansion team, let them choose the city, the team uniform and court colors (and an alternative jersey), and some arena customization. Let them have the city name on the jerseys instead of the crappy stock logos that have been present in the past. Building a team through initially an expansion draft, then later the free agency market and draft picks will be a lot of fun. Let us sign players from the Euro teams in the game too.

4. Change that voice in MyCareer mode. It is not that it is a terrible voice it is just that it is the same voice year in year out. Mix it up a bit. Better still. Let the user pick from a couple of voices for their up and coming NBA star.

5. A proper create a player function on next gen consoles. Next Gen players were force to pick from one of a handful of faces for their MyPlayer character. This led to just about every person’s character looking the same. Hell. Even the majority of computer generated players looked the same. Bring back the create player function where users can pick each physical trait or feature of their dude.

6. Stop penalizing the player with a grade hit in MyCareer for playing help defence. When the opposition point guard blows by your team mate to an open lane you aren’t going to let him have it. Of course you run over to protect the paint and prevent the easy dunk or finger roll. If the point guard kicks the ball out to the player you left and he makes an open mid range jumper so be it. The player played the percentages. He did the right thing. Don’t blast him with an ‘Allowed opponent to score’ penalty.

7. Make the player personality stat actually mean something other than a player waving their arms around more than the other guys each time they make a basket. If Metta World Peace has an unpredictable nature then the game should reflect that. Are we getting Game 7 of the Finals Metta or is his elbow getting friendly with James Harden’s beard? We won’t know until he is on the court and the team should benefit or suffer from that too.

8. Overhaul the crowd. Show us the power of the PC, the PS4 and the XBone. Watching a guy walk back and forth along the seating row or up and down the aisles and the crowd behaving like robots is so yesteryear.

9. Each year we hear about player DNA and how on court performances will affect player ratings in the game and each year this falls short. By why leave it there. If a player starts wearing a calf sleeve or shaves their hair off or grows a beard how about we see that in the game too?

10. How annoying are a lot of the dynamic goals? Being told to take good shots only when you are shooting 0.800 for the night, being told to bring the scores even only to get subbed out in the next play. These things are supposed to be dynamic, right? So why not make them dynamic and fit the context of what is going on out there on the court?

These are ten changes we would like to see in NBA 2k15 and in our opinion this would increase the enjoyment many games will experience in the game. I decided to leave out anything to do with shooting percentages. I don’t have a huge problem with players missing open shots. Teams in the game seem to already shoot at Game 4 San Antonio first half percentages every game. Yeah, this could be eased back to truer shooter percentages but it isn’t really a game breaker for me.

What changes would you like to see in NBA 2k15. Let us know in the comments section below.

With the 82 game NBA regular season over it is time to get primed for the NBA playoffs. This is the time where we all sit in our couches and munch on fried snacks and drown ourselves in gallons of our favourite amber ale whilst we watch the one team strive for NBA supremacy

The thing is, we already know what happens in a coming of age plot. We know that there will have to be many trials and tribulations to be crossed and a lot of self-discovery before the goal is reached. What we don’t know is who the main characters are.

So, whilst we may already know the main plot of the NBA finals, let us take a look at some sub-plots for this year’s NBA Playoffs that we must keep an eye on.

Pat and Me – Patty Mills, a “Professional Article Twirler” (PAT) escapes from Australia and is befriended by a towel that has a lower thread count than the others. Together they try to find PAT’s championship ring, from whom he has never received. After a brief fight when Patty checks in to the game, the two reunite and together hydrate the Spurs players with Gatorade helping the Spurs on to victory. There is no higher pinnacle than being held above an NBA player’s head and swung around.

And don’t forget to bring a towel

Lance Stephenson vs. the World – Lance Stephenson plays for the Indiana Pacers which aspires for a ring. He hasn’t recovered from the heart break of losing last year’s Eastern Conference Finals to the team that would become the Champions. As if maintaining relationships with his team mates wasn’t enough, Lance will need to battle to the death as he encounters previous champions in order to win himself and Indiana the championship.

Lance Stephenson vs. The World

The Big Dirkowzki – When Dirk Nowitzki is mistaken for an oil tycoon, two thugs urinate on his NBA 3 Point Shootout Champion trophy to force him to pay a debt he knows nothing about. When attempting to gain compensation for the soiled trophy from his counterpart he accepts a one time job to make a ransom drop. Through his gun touting friend with anger issues, Steve Nash, the pair keeps the ransom which leads them to more trouble and soon, just about everyone from convicted felons to nihilists want something from ‘The Dirk’.

you better believe it. The Big Dirkowski

Finding Hedo – Whilst waiting for the team bus, Hedo Turkoglu ventures too far away, despite Blake Griffin’s warning about Los Angeles’s dangers. Hedo is abducted by a renegade park ranger and sent to clean windows in San Ysidro. While Blake endeavours out to find Hedo he meets Dennis Rodman, a former NBA player who suffers from short term memory loss. Both Blake and Rodman travel a great distance encountering various dangerous people in Southern California. While doing this, Hedo, who is stuck cleaning windows with other Clippers’ bench players, plot a way to return to the Staples Center so they can play basketball.

The Batuminator – A human looking cyborg (Batum) is sent from the future on a deadly mission. He has to stop James Harden, who through his beard will have a great significane in years to come. Harden has one protector, Dwight Howard, also sent from the future. The Batuminator uses his exceptional intelligence and strength to find Harden, but is there any way to stop the seemingly indestructible cyborg?

The Batuminator

The 90s was a great time for music. Rap and electronic music were finding their way but rock was as strong as it has ever been. Bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, U2, and REM may be forever etched in the memory of the decade however there was so much more on offer. These are the songs that weren’t on the soundtrack of 90s Teen Comedies. Many fantastic songs have faded away much like the royalties and liner notes on the albums they hail from. Let us revisit a great time for rock music. Here are 10 songs you have probably forgotten about but still rock.

Everclear – Heroin Girl (1995)

People may very well remember Everclear and songs such as Santa Monica, and Father of Mine may even spring to mind but Heroin Girl is a power rock ditty that still rocks hard as Art Alexakis pays tribute to the deaths of both his brother and girlfriend to drugs.

Local H – High-Fiving MF (1996)

This track is dirty, rough and raucous, but you cannot help but bop your head along to it. This song is the epitome of what non-mainstream punk was like in the 90s. Crank the volume and prepare to throw yourself around.

Nada Surf – Popular (1996)

This song you may recall and it may have even sparked the small spoken word rock song movement but the angst ridden Kinsion style lyrics are just as tasty as the guitar riffs. Yes, Nada Surf may verbally paint you a portrait of aspired teenage school life as portrayed in Gloria Winters’ 1964 book Penny’s Guide to Teen-age Charm and Popularity but Ms Winters never though her words would be spat with as much gusto.

Green Jellÿ – Bear Song

These are the heavy metal guys that bought you Three Little Pigs but they were more than just a one hit wonder. Their music is solid. Not for those without a sense of humour, Green Jellÿ rocked Hollywood in the 90s with their catchy anthem like tunes.

Shihad – The General Electric (1999)

Before Flight of the Conchords, Shihad were the ones that rocked out for New Zealand. With a steady beat and a killer two chord riff, Shihad’s rock anthem was one to get the mosh pit moving.

Elastica – Connection (1994)

Who is Elastica? I hear you ask. Only the British rock band fronted by Justine Frischmann, who in my opinion set the tone for the ‘Brian Molko look’. Connection was considered good enough by Mike Judge to be subject to critical review from Beavis and Butthead.

Kittie – Brackish (1999)

What about Canada? They crack the list courtesy of Kittie with their mega-track Brackish. The first single off their album Spit, Kittie saw their stardom skyrocket in the rock and roll world but have never found the success they found with their first major release.

Ween – Push the lil Daisies (1992)

The rumors were thick and fast when this single hit the airwaves. Were they drunk? Were they on drugs? Who cares. Dean and Gene from Ween put together a song that people enjoyed then and we are bringing it back now.

Orgy – Blue Monday (1999)

A cover song you ask? Yes, Orgy covered New Order’s 1983 song Blue Monday and gave it their own eerie dark sound with thick distorted guitars complimenting teeth rattling bass. With Jay Gordon’s overly processed voice sitting over the top this is one track that you will always sing along to when you are rocking out in your car.

L7 – Pretend that we’re Dead (1992)

This track was part of the iconic Radio-X playlist from the game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, but how many of you remember it? This track sums up just about everything that was right with early 90s alternative rock. Give it a spin and feel young again.

That is just ten tracks that still rock from the 90s. I feel like I could keep going on listing song after song. Which ones did we miss out? Which ones would you add to the list? Tell us in the comments section below.
