Allen Iverson retires from the NBA… we think
Though he hasn’t played in the NBA for a few years, Allen Iverson is finally hanging up the Reeboks… We think. Slam Online reported on 21 August that Iverson was set to announce his retirement in the next couple of days but the world is yet to hear him utter those words. In reality, Iverson was never set to return to the NBA, so, Allen, just say the words if only for closure. So with that knowledge, let’s take a look back and remember Allen Iverson.
Standing at barely six feet tall, Allen Iverson was arguably pound for pound one of the best players of the modern era. With is trademark corn rows, baggy shorts and shooting sleeve, Allen Iverson dazzled crowds and broke opponents ankles, cross over dribbling his way to 11 allstar appearances, multiple Team USA appearances, 1997 Rookie of the Year, and the 2001 MVP award; leaves the game with NBA averages of 26.7 ppg, 6.2 apg and 2.2 spg.
Though it may be off the court that the number 1 pick in the 1996 NBA draft, Allen Iverson left a greater impression. From urinating in trash cans in casinos to arrests for carrying concealed weapons and pot, to announcing he is broke, Iverson talked about practice, didn’t know any allstars that came off the bench and criticized the NBA’s dress code on his way to many people’s ‘do not like’ list.
No matter what your view is on Allen Iverson, you cannot argue his impact, both on the court and culturally. Though Allen Iverson lost the NBA back in 2010 Iverson’s retirement formalizes that the fans have lost a personality of the game; even is that personality is self-centred but very entertaining to watch.
